Crucial Tip: The rest stop on I-80 Westbound is my top recommendation because it provides easy access to the salt flats, features restrooms, and even has a foot wash station to clean off the salt before getting back in your vehicle. It’s crucial not to miss this stop on your first pass, as the next legal turnaround is many miles away.
If you’re traveling Eastbound on I-80 and miss the rest stop, we experienced this ourselves and had to turn around in Wendover, the nearest town. While it’s not ideal or recommended, you can still park at the Eastbound rest area and cross the highway on foot, though it involves leaving your vehicle behind and navigating through fast-moving traffic.
